Employment Outlook Survey - from Manpower.

Ireland’s employment market likely to remain reserved in Quarter 4 2011 while the Pharmaceutical sector gains more momentum.
The Net Employment Outlook of 0% for Quarter 4, 2011, is the most optimistic employer forecast in 3 years; forecasts in eight of 11 industry sectors improve in year-over-year comparisons.

Dublin, Tuesday, 13th September 2011 – Manpower, the leader in contingent and permanent recruitment workforce solutions, today releases the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey which reveals that, overall, employers in Ireland expect the labour market to remain muted in the three months to the end of December. However, the seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook stands at 0% -- 3 percentage points stronger both quarter-overquarter and year-over-year – and is the most positive forecast since Quarter 3 2008. For the fourth consecutive quarter, employers in the Pharmaceuticals sector report the most optimistic hiring plans.

Employers in four of the 11 industry sectors surveyed report positive hiring intentions.

Stronger quarter-over-quarter hiring plans are reported by employers in nine of the 11 industries sectors surveyed and the Net Employment Outlook improves in eight sectors year over-year.

  • Employers in the Pharmaceutical sector report the most upbeat hiring plans of the 11 industry sectors, with an Outlook of +11%. This is 4 percentage points stronger than last quarter and represents a considerable 12 percentage point increase year-over-year.
  • Manufacturing employers report the strongest hiring prospects since Quarter 3 2008, with a Net Employment Outlook of +3%.
  • Slightly improved job prospects are predicted in both the Construction and the Public & Social sectors where Outlooks stands at +2%.
  • Finance, Insurance, Real Estate & Business Services employers report mixed signals for job seekers with a Net Employment Outlook of 0%.

“The Pharmaceutical sector continues to perform strongly which is likely to drive job creation and is positive news for job seekers in the sector. Furthermore, the survey reveals that employment opportunities could arise in the Manufacturing, Public & Social and Construction sectors” commented Krissie Davies, Manpower Ireland Managing Director. “We’re also seeing a steady number of finance roles available at the moment. The predicament for employers is that many of the candidates suitable for these roles are already engaged in fulltime employment. This may soon create some movement in the sector.”

“While the Net Employment Outlook is the most optimistic since Quarter 3 2008, the survey results also indicate that employers will remain cautious over the next three months. Business confidence seems to be improving but the operating environment remains very challenging. Flexibility, agility and a talented workforce remain crucial to navigate through the recovery,” she added.

The Outlook for the Transport, Storage & Communication sector is a sluggish -5%, however, this represents a considerable improvement of 10 percentage points compared to Quarter 3 2011. Restaurants & Hotels sector employers anticipate downbeat hiring prospects with an Outlook of -4% -- a considerable decline after the summer season of 16 percentage points year-over-year.

Regional Net Employment Outlook

Employers in three out of the five regions surveyed expect to increase or make no change to their payrolls in Quarter 4 2011. Dublin employers report positive hiring prospects with an Outlook of +4%. The Outlook improves considerably by 10 percentage points year-over-year. “Dublin employers are sending positive signals to job seekers for the quarter ahead. The Outlook for the region is up a considerable 9 percentage points quarter-over-quarter and this evolution reflects what we are experiencing across our specialist recruitment divisions. An increasing number of vacancies are becoming available—notably multilingual, business development and customer service roles,” said Davies.

“In the Munster area, employers forecast slow-paced headcount growth in Quarter 4 2011, reporting an Outlook of +1%,” she continued. “The region is an attractive location for business and this is an encouraging sign for short-term prospects.” Elsewhere, employers in Ulster (-2%) and Connaught (-4%) continue to anticipate a downbeat hiring climate for job seekers. The Outlook for Quarter 4 2011 remains unchanged
in Leinster. In the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, the survey indicates that labour market trends continue to follow the similar mixed pattern reported by employers throughout 2011, with positive hiring activity expected in 18 of 23 countries surveyed: Outlooks decline from Quarter 3 2011 in 13 countries but improve in 11 compared to one year ago. Regional hiring plans are strongest in Turkey (+20%), Israel (+16%), Bulgaria (+13%) and Norway (+13%) and weakest in Greece (-13%) and Italy (-10%) where the Outlooks decline to gloomy levels as employer optimism continues to sink.
The next Manpower Employment Outlook Survey will be released on 13th December 2011 to report hiring expectations for the first quarter of 2012. The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey is available free of charge to the public and can be downloaded from http://www.manpower.ie/.

Manpower Employment Outlook Survey: Ireland’s employers expect to hold steady in the third quarter with 94% expecting no further redundancies

Hiring plans in the Pharmaceutical sector remain positive; pressure on the Construction sector appears to be easing despite ongoing challenges.

Dublin, Tuesday, 14th June 2011 - The latest Manpower Employment Outlook survey reveals that 90 percent of Irish employers surveyed expect no change in their workforce in the third quarter. Nevertheless, hiring activity is expected to remain sluggish. The survey of more than 600 Irish employers, across five regions and 11 industry sectors indicates that the overall employment climate is expected to remain downbeat in the July through September period. Of the polled employers, 4 percent anticipate increased hiring and 5 percent forecast workforce reductions. The seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook of -4% is relatively stable quarter-over-quarter and is 3 percentage points stronger compared to Quarter 3 2010.

Employers in the Pharmaceutical sector forecast the strongest hiring plans amongst the 11 industry sectors surveyed, with an encouraging Net Employment Outlook of +5%. Although the Construction sector Outlook stands at a flat 0%, this is the first time since the second quarter of 2008 that employers in the sector have not reported negative hiring intentions. The Construction sector Outlook has also climbed 33 percentage points since the bleak forecasts reported in the first quarter of 2009.

Employers in seven of the 11 industry sectors anticipate a decrease in headcount over the next quarter. The Transport, Storage & Communication sector employers report a struggling Net Employment Outlook of -10%, down 8 percentage points from last quarter. Employers in the Restaurants & Hotels sector forecast sagging hiring prospects in the next quarter, with an Outlook of -8%. Downbeat hiring intentions are reported by employers in the Finance & Business Services (-4%), Manufacturing (-4%), Wholesale & Retail Trade (-4%) and Electricity, Gas & Water (-2%) sectors.

Despite the negative numbers, the Net Employment Outlook has improved in six industry sectors quarter-over-quarter. Compared to a year ago, hiring plans are stronger in five industry sectors, notably Construction (up 12 percentage points), Mining & Quarrying (up 11 percentage points), Pharmaceutical (up 9 percentage points) and Public & Social and Agriculture, Fishing & Forestry (both up 7 percentage points).

“Organisations are coping with operational and trading challenges as they progress through the recovery. These results reflect the uncertainty and fluctuations businesses are facing,” commented Krissie Davies, Manpower Ireland Managing Director.

Employers in all five regions report negative hiring plans yet the Outlook is stronger in four of the regions both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year. Dublin region employers indicate the weakest Outlook at -5%, which is down by 8 percentage points compared to the second quarter but is 4 percentage points stronger year-over-year. Weak hiring prospects are expected by employers in Munster (-4%), Ulster (-4%), Connaught (-2%) and Leinster (-2%). Noteworthy, the Net Employment Outlook in Connaught is 8 percentage points stronger compared to a year ago.

“We are seeing the fears which paralysed job seekers during the recession, such as last in-first out, being replaced by increased confidence and a growing number of individuals are changing jobs,” said Davies. “Networking both on and offline creates opportunities, which is what the Human Age is about for job seekers: being ready to take advantage of opportunities, to realise one’s potential and ambition.”

In the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, employers report positive hiring intentions in 17 of the 21 countries surveyed with individual Outlooks improving in 13 of 21 countries from three months ago and year-over-year. Hiring expectations are strongest in Turkey (+35%), Romania (+20), Bulgaria (+14%) and Poland (+14%). The weakest hiring intentions are reported by employers in Spain (-10%), Greece (-5%) and Italy (-5%).

The next Manpower Employment Outlook Survey will be released on 13th September 2011 to report hiring expectations for the fourth quarter of 2011. The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey is available free of charge to the public and can be downloaded from www.manpower.ie.

About the Survey

An innovative workforce solutions company, ManpowerGroup releases the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey quarterly to measure employers’ intentions to increase or decrease the number of employees in their workforce during the next quarter. It is the world’s most extensive, forward-looking employment survey, polling over 63,000 employers in 39 countries and territories.

In Ireland, the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey is conducted by interviewing a representative sample of 628 Irish employers. All survey participants were asked: “How do you anticipate total employment at your location to change in the three months to the end of September 2011 as compared to the current quarter?”

The overall ‘Net Employment Outlook is calculated by taking the percentage of employers anticipating total employment to increase and subtracting from this the percentage expecting to see a decrease in employment at their location in the next quarter. This figure is then amended according to any seasonal variations in recruitment patterns as witnessed since the survey began in Ireland in 2002.

Jobs sector update

Total average number of jobs per day on the gradireland site for May 2011 was 216, up from 178 in April. This is a year-on-year increase of 80% (May 2010 average was 120 live jobs). This is the highest number of opportunities gradireland have ever had on the site, with these 216 (average) opportunities equating to well over 250 actual jobs, internships or grad schemes. These opportunities will all be printed out and pasted onto a live Jobs Wall at the Summer Fair, which is a new initiative gradireland are implementing this year.

Top 10 sectors for jobs on gradireland (in order)

1. IT and telecoms

2. Engineering

3. Accountancy & Financial Management

4. Marketing, Advertising and PR

5. Management, Business, Administration

6. Banking, Insurance and financial services

7. Retail, Sales and Customer services

8. Science, Research and Development

9. Management Consulting

10. Manufacturing and Processing

Trend analysis:   As we all know, IT grads are in great demand, and this sector was the only one where the number of jobs in May was actually down on April – this is because the jobs don’t often stay on the site too long as they are filled quickly. Indeed, in the office we have had innumerable calls from employers across a variety of sectors asking us to take jobs off the site before their actual deadline as they have successfully either filled the position, or received enough suitably-qualified applicants. This is very positive for gradireland as it shows that the site is delivering not just quantity but quality of applicants. We have been canvassing each employer during these calls and 100% are delighted with the quality of applicants and response they have received.

Most sectors have seen an increase in numbers of opportunities on gradireland during May but the main ones are: Engineering (up 20%); Marketing (up 32%); Science/R&D (up 53%); Manufacturing (up 36%); and Charities/voluntary sector.

New Tips for your Telephone Interview

Tips for the telephone interview

To impress over the line, you need to be as enthusiastic and prepared as you would be face-to-face.
Helen Menhenett reveals how it's doneTelephone handset

Selected from the guardian.co.uk, Monday 4 April 2011 09.30 BST

You might think that the best thing about a telephone interview is that, like a radio presenter, you don't have to worry about how you look.
But, an interview is still an interview even if you don't have to go to their offices. You need to be as prepared and well presented as you would be for a face to face interview.

Initial interviews by telephone are more common than they used to be. It's an inexpensive way to screen candidates in the initial stages of a recruitment campaign. The recruiter may just be looking for a confident manner and intelligent responses to some set questions. But don't take anything for granted. You may find you are on the phone for an hour and a half and are expected to answer detailed questions about previous roles and achievements.

Don't allow yourself to be caught on the hop. If you're not able to make some quiet time when they call then set a time for the interview to take place. You have to be a bit more organised about the telephone interview because it's on your home turf. Make sure you won't be interrupted and be sure to charge your phone in advance. Keep a copy of your CV by the phone and all the other relevant information you might need. Prepare and compose yourself in advance. If you sound confused and disorganised you might not get a second chance.

You should have some information from the prospective employer about the role and company. Think about answers you might give to their questions, particularly with regard to competency based questions. Do your research and prepare some questions to ask them exactly as you would for a regular interview.

Smile when you talk on the telephone. You'll be more relaxed, you'll sound more confident and assertive. Seriously think about using a headset for telephone interviews. Apart from the fact that it will make it much easier to take notes you'll be able to concentrate on the conversation rather than on balancing the phone between shoulder and ear while you search for a pen.

In all other respects treat the interview as you would a one to one but remember that time tends to be limited for a phone interview. It's a good idea to ask at the start, if not before the interview, about the structure or sequence of the interview process so you know what to expect. If part of the process is going to be that you are offered a choice of topics to brainstorm you don't want to be taken by surprise.

A phone interview is likely to feel less spontaneous and flexible than a one to one. The interviewer may well have a set script of questions and while you may feel rushed, at some points, if the interviewer thinks they have the information they need they will want to move on.

This is the tricky thing about the telephone interview - you can't judge reactions in the same way as when you are face to face with an interviewer. It's a little harder to engage the interviewer in a two-way conversation if she has a schedule of questions and a row of tick boxes. As you don't get the feedback or body language information that help in the face to face situation, it might be useful to ask questions such as "is that what you needed to know?" or "do you want me to go into more detail?"

Other things to bear in mind? Make sure you sound enthusiastic, the sort of person they want on the team. Pace yourself, a good interviewer knows you may need a little time to compose a good response, so do take time to think about answers. Be aware that they may be pushing you to answer as part of their interview technique. Listen carefully and if you don't fully understand the question, ask for clarification. Don't allow yourself to become flustered, especially if some of the questions seem either irrelevant or overly-specific. And remember the interview may need some time to make notes between questions so don't worry unduly about short silences, be patient.

Make sure you have the interviewer's email details so that after the interview ends you can write to them a thank you note, so as to reiterate your interest in the role and outline key points discussed and what you think you bring to the table.
