Undergraduate Awards & Genepool

The Undergraduate Awards of Ireland and Northern Ireland aims to be the champion of today’s undergraduates, providing them with a platform from which to launch their ideas and showcase their work as well as provide them with opportunities to further themselves in their chosen career paths, be that through our Where Next networking events or through our alignment with GenePool graduate recruitment. All those who submit their essays to the Undergraduate Awards are instantly added to GenePool’s database where they will have access to graduate positions, work placements & internships. They will be given prominence over other applicants to GenePool’s database and should they go on to win an award, they will be given top priority for any positions that should arise.

Below please find the criteria for the essays that final & penultimate year students can submit for consideration for an Undergraduate Award.

Eligible submissions are drawn from corrected coursework which:

• Achieved a grade of 2.1 or above and/or a percentage of 65% or above

• Represents the highest standards of intellectual and scholarly achievement

• Embodies a piece of independent and original work

• Takes the form of a text-based essay/project, with images/graphics where relevant, and take the form of a critical/analytical discourse

• Whole and complete essays/projects. (NB: extracts/summaries must be approved by your lecturer.)

• Essays/projects no longer than 5000 words, and no shorter than 1750 words

• Individual essays/projects only. Group submissions are not allowed at this stage

Good News!
According to the recent GradIreland/AHECS
Jobs update there is an increase of the number of job vacancies advertised on the gradireland website.

Total average number of jobs per day on the site for April 2011 was 178. This is an increase on the March average (168), and a year-on-year increase of 20% (April 2010 average was 148 live jobs).


Top 10 sectors for jobs on gradireland (in order)

1. IT and telecoms
2. Engineering
3. Accountancy and financial management
4. Marketing, advertising and PR
5. Management, business, administration
6. Banking, insurance and financial services
7. Retail, sales and customer services
8. Management consulting
9. Science, research and development
10. Manufacturing and processing

Trend analysis: The IT & Telecoms sector continues to show strong and sustained demand. 40% of the jobs were in the top 3 sectors. 15.7% of the jobs on the site are classed as graduate work placements or internships, which is has been pretty constant all year.

Most of these jobs are located in Ireland (north and south), although 20% are either UK-based or further afield, an increase of 7% since the turn of the year. The financial services and accounting sectors are the areas with the highest number of international opportunities.

UCC Recruitment Fair 2009

UCC CAREERS FAIR HAS ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES

The UCC Autumn Recruitment Fair will take place on the 13th October 2009 in the Multifunctional Hall, UCC. Seamus McEvoy, Head of the Careers Service Department, highlighted the positive demand that employers have for targeting and recruiting the students of UCC. “Despite the present economic climate, we are delighted that approx 43 employers are coming to UCC for our annual recruitment fair next Tuesday. Our goal is to ensure that all UCC students have the opportunity to meet as many employers as possible in the year prior to entering the Job Market. As well as the annual recruitment fair, UCC Careers Service will host Milk Round presentations which are ongoing until Christmas”.
